Meaningful Music Monday- I Am

I AM- David Crowder

Every once in a while I come across a worship song that strikes me. Usually it is due to the lyrics and passion behind the song. Sometimes it is due to the key and my likeliness to belt it out in the car when no one is watching, or at least I think no one is watching…Whatever the reason, I AM, a new song out on Crowder’s new Neon Steeple, is one of those songs.

The lyrics are perplexing, as you first start to listen, it’s as if you, the singer, are talking to God and saying “I am holding on to you God, through the storm and through the rain…” But then it hits you, maybe it’s not you singing to God, but God singing to you. I enjoy the lyrics and the idea that maybe it is both us and God speaking. The idea of the transcendence of God within the whole song is comforting and meaningful. So regardless of who is doing the singing, God is there, our attempt to hold on to God is supported by I AM, both our words and God are active.

The kids and I have had a great time singing this on the way to school drop off. It has been the #1 requested song from our son Caden, and we all join in on singing the chorus. This brings me such great joy as my kids will hopefully remember God is with them, holding them through the ups and downs in life. But it is also us seeking where God is active in our own lives which will help our faith grow through the interaction of the Spirit.
